SUBJECT:       CROSS COUNTRY BORDER WAR WITH AZ, & NM

Your hard work and determination as you prepare for the Region and State Cross Country Meets could allow you the opportunity to compete against the best student-athletes from New Mexico in the fourth annual border war.  This is an activity that we as coaches believe will continually be a very exciting and competitive event.

This will take place on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Kiwanis Park, in Tempe, AZ.  The time of the race will be at 2:00 p.m.  There will be two races a boys and a girls race.  To qualify for this race, student-athletes must have ran in the State CC race and finished in the top three (class 1-A –3-A); overall top 3 in 4A Div 1 & 2 and the top four overall in 5-A Div 1 & 2 and finally to complete the field of 25 athletes the next 12 best times overall that were recorded at the state meet.

By Sunday, Nov 5th, we will have the rankings sent out to the cc coaches as to how the students ended up.  I know the turn around time is short but, in order to have things in place, we as an association need to have an answer from the athlete as to whether you accept or not.  You will need to respond back by Thursday, Nov 9th (remember that Nov 10th there is no school, due to Veterans Day).  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me (Coach Steve Johnson) regarding your question.

If you need to get a hold of me you can email at one of the following addresses:

Work – sjohnson4@phxhs.k12.az.us or at my home - sjohnson4@myexcel.com.  If you need to call me I can be reached at Maryvale High School 602-764-2402 (this is a voice mail number where you can leave a message) or (H) 623-322-7564, I have voice mail so if I am not home please leave me a message and I will get back to you.

For the student athletes participating in the border war you will be charged a $12.00 fee (if it is less I will let you know) which will cover the cost of your uniform top only, you will need to provide your own running shorts.  For those of you who are interested in knowing our uiniform top will be the as close as to the same color that we use for the Great Southwest T&F meet (which is red)

One final thought for all participants in the border war.  Every student athlete needs to be a member of the USA Track & Field.  The fee for this is approximately $15.00.  The reason for the membership is strictly for insurance purposes and making it legal for you to run in the border war without any jeopardy to your high school elgibility.

I will be sending out at the end of this week, an information form for you to fill out and have returned back to me for the students who qualify for the border war.

Good luck on your preparation for a successful season,

Steve Johnson
